Dog ID Law - Control Of Dogs Order

Control of Dogs Order 1992

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but we highly recommend this).

You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog is not wearing an identification tag in a public place!

You do not have to put your dogs name on the tag, this is optional and something that we would not recommend. Unfortunately dog theft is a real danger and if the thief knows the name of your dog this can help them pass on the dog to the unsuspecting new owners because it appears they know the dog because the dog responds to their name.

An example of the information to put on a dog tag is:

A lot of people people think that having their dog micro chipped is a good enough form of identification and that having an engraved dog tag  isn’t necessary. This is incorrect and your dog MUST wear a clearly engraved dog tag with your contact details on at all times when in public places.

The use of a tag is also very helpful if your dog should get out or bolt after a rabbit on his walk, as it would allow the person who found him to contract you directly.

You can also buy a medical vet dog tag so you can state any medical conditions your dog may have or medications they may need.

Just because it is the law for your dog to wear identification or a dog ID tag, doesn't mean your dog tag can't be fun and stylish, as long as it contains all the required legal information. And you will feel safer knowing your dog can be identified if they go missing.
